Apart from hearing
the popular tune “Duelling banjos” many people are unaware of the
recent impact of bluegrass music worldwide. This has been helped by
the film “Oh Brother where art thou ?” starring George Clooney.
It is a million dollar industry and popular worldwide.
One could spend weeks discussing the whole subject of bluegrass
music which was created by Bill Monroe from Rosine, Kentucky, USA
and the legendary banjo player Earl Scruggs of “Beverly Hillbillies”
fame.
During the last 30 years, musician Jimmy Powells has had genuine
love in all the aspects of Bluegrass Music and has played in various
bluegrass bands. With his wife Carol they still don’t go on proper
holidays but choose instead to attend bluegrass festivals in the UK.
They both sing. Carol plays double bass and Jimmy plays guitar and
mandolin.
Carol and Jimmy are able to offer the “Bluegrass Experience” in the
form of an hour long talk (with live and recorded music to
illustrate the style) in which they hope to pass on their
enthusiasm for this wonderful, accessible genre of music.
We charge £40 if it’s within 15 miles of Cramlington. Sometimes
Jimmy does the show on his own and sometimes with Carol. Price is
the same either way. |
